Finally back from being on the road working and have time for a little fish report on Muskrat Lake. Was out there last Saturday, targeting pike, and we whacked 'em!
The lake, unlike many others in our area, seems really low. At least four feet lower than in the spring. We launched in Cobden and started at the very opposite end of the lake where the Muskrat River (I think that's what it's called.) meets the lake. I dropped the trolling motor in front of the docks at that campground there and worked the weedline in about 4-7 feet of water, clock-wise, all around the edge of that bay. I was catching a pike on every other cast with the odd largemouth thrown in there. We must have hit that bay at just the right time because they were on the feed bag. We then hit various other bays moving back down the lake towards Cobden (On the southwest shore.) and caught alot more on weedlines, again, in about 4-7 feet of water. The majority of them were caught on a Mepp's Aglia Long #3. Simply the best pike lure there is. ;D Most of them were in the 2-4 pound range as well. I can't wait until fall when the gators come out.
We caught some nice smallies as well. Most of them were caught along cliff walls on the northeast shoreline with Gulp 3-inch black-shad minnows on a drop shot rig. Not a lot of big ones but good numbers. Just go up to any rock outcropping or cliff wall and start fishing...they're there. It'll be interesting to see the weights brought in at tomorrow's SEBO event. I know they'll whack some fatties, as they normally do at this event.
It's been quiet on this board lately, I hope everyone is out enjoying summer and getting lots of fishing in. The season will be over before you know it.
Cheers!
