Was out on Muskrat Lake yesterday with two friends, and the bite was mediocre. It wasn't on fire, but not a bad day. We caught pike and, despite our best efforts to avoid them, the bass (largemouth and smallmouth) were biting quite well. The pike were slow as they seem to be everywhere. There is no weed growth whatsoever on Muskrat as of yet, and all fish were caught in 1-3 feet of water, up on the flooded banks. White spinnerbaits, Mepps Aglia Long #3, and a perch coloured Strike King Redeye Shad were the producers. We actually caught some pike on Senkos, which we decided to try because they were hitting short a lot and we figured we'd slow down and see what happens. If you've never tried it, a shad coloured Senko is often quite good for northerns, especially in the fall when they're feeding on grown up baitfish.
The highlights of the day were a 6-8 pound pike that attacked my bait at the side of the boat which scared the heck out of all of us, and a 8-12 pound lake trout that hit me near the side of the boat, stayed on for a few seconds, then got loose. I saw him completely and sure wish I had gotten him in for the smoker or a bag of cornflakes. Mmmmm...
Monday the 19th I'll be carp fishing with some friends and the folks that own the Long Sault Motel and run the Canadian Carp Club. We'll be going out on a pontoon boat for an 8 hour trip and hopefully bringing in lots of behemoth carp. 20-30 pounders are supposedly quite common so it should be a good time. We'll be doing it English style so it will be a whole new experience for me as well. I'll let you know how it goes.
Cheers!
