Catching all kinds of big smallmouth, largemouth, and pike at the mouth of the Raisin River in Lancaster, ON.
Many fish were hitting at the mud line, at the very mouth where the muddy Raisin meets the clear St. Lawrence. Big pike along the weed edges inside the mouth up to 100-150 yards in. All fish caught in around 1-5 feet of water on 3-inch single-tail grubs in white, chartreuse, and orange. Throw them on 1/8 or lighter jig heads for a slow fall.
Go soon for some awesome action. They'll be moving deeper soon.
For anyone interested, I was also out on Oneida Lake near Syracuse over the weekend. They have a catch and release bass season there, and the smallmouth action is always fun on Lake Oneida. Caught plenty of 2-3lb smallies that were quite eager to give you a good scrap on light tackle. Caught some pickerel (Not walleye, actual pickerel of the chain variety.) and some largemouth as well. The smallies were mostly hitting watermelon senkos rigged wacky style. Bigger fish would hit them Texas-rigged, but more numbers came on the wacky rig.
The pickerel were biting well too. They were really smackin' the Texas-rigged senkos, in watermelon as well. All the fish seemed to like the darker green over a lighter colour such as green pumpkin. We caught most of our smallmouth in 1-4 feet of water just west of the Oneida Shores boat launch, and up the Oneida River towards the Erie Canal, in a mile stretch before the lock, casting on the rocky shorelines and around docks. The pickerel and largemouth came from the weed edges in Big Bay in 4-7 feet of water.
