Hi All,
Was out on Muskrat Lake this past Thursday, Sept. 7th, and had a good day. Didn't find many smallmouth, or any walleye, but had a great day hauling in largemouth and big pike. The north end produced the best and the pike were hitting spinnerbaits, any colour, and perch coloured crankbaits. We even caught some pike on weightless senko type baits. In the shallows they liked the spinnerbaits and Mepps in-line spinners (Aglia #4 dressed in chartreuse), but we caught a fair number of pike off deep rock drop-offs as well, with a deep-diving crank in 20-25 feet of water. We crossed paths with several pike well over 4 pounds and even one that I estimate to be around 6-8 pounds.
The largemouth were hitting senko type stick worms, perch coloured crankbaits (4-8 feet), and top-water baits produced well early in the day, particularly Zara Spooks. They were shallow, relative to this lake, and on the southern shore in the bays and weeds. We tried a good portion of the deeper, rockier northern shoreline, searching for smallmouth, but didn't hook into anything substantial. Caught smaller ones but that's about it. For all the pike and largemouth we caught though, the upper end of the lake, in the bay at the mouth of the river, was the place to be.
