Posts: 202 Favourite Crappie Bait?? « Thread started on: Apr 12th, 2005, 10:38am » <br> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My favourite crappie bait would have to be a tube. Insert a 1/16th oz jig head into a 1" tube and be prepared to catch a bucket load.
What is your favourite crappie bait??

Your not going to believe this, but I want to be truthful with you all. My favourite bait is a minnow , mud Minnow to be exact.I catch a lot of big Crappies on this with a split shot and bobber.

I'm not ashamed, I catch lot of crappies every year.It is one of the major food fish in this house. Now I'm going to make this sound even worse, I use a bamboo rod with 10 feet of 12lb test because the tangles that I pull my fish from you could not use traditional gear.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Pete We got a little of topic, The Rideau down by me is opening up figure will be lauching a boat this week end if you wanted. Hope this weather keeps up the crappie will be biting full tilt on those big Mud minnows I have already caught in the trap. Next couple of weeks the water in some of the creeks should settle down and the golden shiners will run. My number one bait for walleye. I have a keep box in the creek that I keep them in for the summer. Jeremy

I'll be getting my boat out of storage this weekend. I need to get it ready for next month. I hope to get out on it at least 1 time before heading south. ;D As for crappie fishing....I hope to be doing some on Sunday with Kim and Jessica. Perhaps we can get together and do some shore fishing for some slabs. I also hope to try near the house some evening this week to see if they are there. When I do I will let you know. I meant to ask you if you ever used one of those carppie spinnerbaits....no pun intended., Pete

Pete Just finished eating our first limit of Crappie caught them yesterday. Kids had them for breakfeast, little bums did not even leave some for me. I'm on way out the door right now to go and get some more. I caught them all on a two in tube, gold green and orange belly. Talk at you later. Give me a call on Sunday so we can hook up 2 boys and I would love to joint the group. Jeremy

That's great. It's nice to see that someone is catching them. I assume that with this weather warming up the way it is that more and more of them are going to start making their way to the backs of creek channels. I'll call you Sunday. Pete

Hmm... crappie bait...that's a tough one.
I used to spinfish for them....caught most on chartreuse/red marabou jigs with a 1/16 oz jighead.
For flyfishing I switch between 3 flies.
-the krystal minnow- Size 8 wet nymph hook "cheap" with a chartreuse marabou tail. It has lead wire down the shank with pearl krystal flash wrapped over top of it like a chenille. I wrap red krystal flash at the front as gills, and put on small chain eyes. This is good for fishing in places where OOS bass come in to play...they don't seem to hit it as much as sa

-the crappie candy-http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/052801fotw.html
I tie it in larger sizes to keep off the bluegill.......and it catches pike too ;D
the clouser minnow- I fish this alot...but I try to keep it off when fishing new places where bass might be. I like chartreuse/white....its great for crappie and great for pike too!!
I know you bass fisherman hate pike...but I love em' ;D

Hey YFF, Yes I hate pike. They can destroy a brand new spinnerbait and not feel bad about it either. As for crappie baits, I like either a 1/16th oz tube of black jig head with a pumkpsin seed grub. Pete

Hello! Can't say much about Crappie as I've never fished for them. Would like to next spring though. I'm anxious to taste one. However, I do feel I need to add this for all you pike naysayers : Pike rock!! There aren't too many sport fish as voracious as pike, nor as hard fighting as one. I agree with yungflyfisher...love 'em! Gary

Got to tell you the truth. I'm fishing pike this week end on the Rideau with spinnerbaits Love them too. Nice food fish also when caught in cold water.
Gary next spring lets try and hook up love to go crappie fishing with you . Think I can find one or two of those little critters. I fish them all winter also through the ice.
Later Jeremy

Pete
The Fairmile Launch , thats the one right across from Pirate Cove Marina. I normally fish just above the catch all. Lots of walleye and pike this time of year and some crappie's every now and then. Bucktail jigs and minnow and spinnerbaits.
Maybe see you on Saturday then ? The only reason I will not be deer hunting the gun hunt is still on and I hate wearing that pumpkin orange. I don't like the fact of the dogs either for deer hunting. To each there own though. We all have our own ways to do things and all us hunters need to stick together.
Jeremy ;D
