Lorenzo Yes I use a deep cycle battery(Series 27) as I run some electronic stuff ( Second trolling motor, flasher live well etc..). Mind you I only have a small boat and its set up for Walleye, duck hunting etc. Jeremy

I don't think there's any problem using a deep cycle as a starter battery. It just not as cost efficeint because of the thicker plates used in the deep cycle batteries. The previous brand of deep cycle battery I used was labled for both deep cycle and starting.

Deep cycle batteries like at least a 10 amp charge rate in order to get the longest life from them and need a full charge cycle. You can't depend on your alternater to charge it all the way up unless you're running the motor and it's not good to leave a deep cycle for more than a day or two without being fully charged. Starter batteries don't need as long time charging (because you're just using a short burst to start up) and can deal with lower amp charge rates plus cost less. Slightly off topic but interesting if you haven't seen it; a website that says who makes who's battery: www.uuhome.de/william.darden/batbrand.htm
