Hey Folks, I found this on another site and I thought that it was worth mentioning on here. One of our members yungflyfisherman has been accepted to fish on the youth fly fishing team for 2006. Fly fishing in Portugal. That is going to be an amazing adventure. Congratulation YYF. I hope that you will let us know how it goes. Best of luck, Pete

Hey YFF,
What did you have to do to qualify? Keep us posted on how the practice goes and the results.
Congratulations!

wow, thanks guys....it wasnt very difficult....just sent some pictures and a page long resume and then he got back to me. I am very exited....we get a week of guided fishing too and then there's 5 days of competition. I am not used to the euoropean style of flyfishing so I really have my work cut out for me. We're supposed to tie flies down to size 28-30 and I've never tried techniques like czech nymphing before. I'm gonna be practising at brewery creek in hull and hopefully I can coax the parents in a trip to upstate NY Sorry I havent been this site or any message board lately...I check it once a day but i've been really busy with summatives and i've been fishing almost every day in may ;D mike

Hey Mike, No need to apologize my friend. Fishing is what it's all about. The board is just to share your experiences and knowledge with others. I do however, let us know how you make out. This is a great opportunity for you. Good Luck Pete

Hey YFF, Have some experience Czech nymphing as family is from Europe and they use them a lot on the beats over there, Pretty intense stuff You are not allowed to use a strike indicator (If i remember right?) Do you know which waters you will be fishing? I know quite a few of the waters or know people that have likely fished them. If you know the fly patterns you need let me know what you are missing even the small sizes22 down to 28. I'm very proficient at tying these small flies, and would be glad to tie up a box for you to take with you. Czech nymphs do you have a pattern? If not I have several and would also be glad to tie them for you. If you need any flies just let me know and I will do what I can for you? Do you need to get cites permits for flies you are taking there that could be on the list of restricted feathers or furs? I know this sounds crazy but I'm entering a World level fly tying competition in Scandinavia in 2007, and if cites permits are not with the flies you will be disqualified. Simple animals like Grey fox , bear are on this list. Anyways if there is anything I can do for you with flies they are free! Consider this my way of trying to help relieve some of your financial burden! Let me know, Jeremy Parker

hey jeremy,
You are not allowed to use a strike indicator, but what most people do is use a large fly "the blob" which is an estaz fly that is very visible.
The rivers are shallow and crystal clear..and contain ONLY brown trout. Sounds pretty tricky. I deleted the e-mail with the rivers...but I remember the rio Vez.
Thanks for the offer Jeremey. I'll have to take you up on that. I OWE you big-time!!!!!! Just a couple of flies you think will work and i'll do my best to duplicate them.I rellly appreciate it, and I havent even found size 28 hooks anywhere!!

Thanks so much!!!
I cant wait to try the massive white bunny leech you gave me at the seminar. Theres a chance i'll be fishing for tiger muskies this weekend and i'll give it a shot.
thanks a million!!
mike
PS-Tony aggreed to sponsor me. I'm gonna wear a shirt with a picture of tony and the writing "tony is a good man" ;D

YFF, Should be putting the flies in the mail to you within the next couple of days. Please excuse the primitive hooks as they all have barbs If you want to use them in the competition you will have to debarb them so they will pass the cotton test. squeezing them down with the pliers should do it. I hope the few flies I'm sending you help out. I would have tied more but i ran out of hooks. These are fish catching flies so they are not pretty, but work. Give it your best my young friend but remember to always enjoy the time you have? You will only realize how special an opportunity this is years after you have done it? God Bless, Jeremy

hey Jeremy, the competition finished about a week ago. The entire team and I did not do well unfortunately. Our best finish was 38th place out of about 55 anglers. The fishing there was crazy!! Small overgrown streams i could jump over with a running start....if there weren't so many trees LOL. The only cast that worked was the bow and arrow cast. I had an amazing time though, learned a lot about fly fishing and met some new friends from other teams. France came in first place with Czech republic taking second and Portugal taking third. I fished 4 of the 5 sessions in the competition. The flies Jeremy tied me were perfect for the competition. I did well on the small black bead head brown dubbing caddis nymph. As you said simple, but very effective. In the competition teams were using large flies size 10-14!!! The smaller flies would catch the small wild browns but they did not count if they were smaller than 18 cm, but the larger dries worked for the ones the stocked and grew into 20-25 cm. The one I caught in the competition was wild and just squeaked by the slot size by .5 cm. Still the difference between a blank(skunk) and 1 small trout is massive. I am only 14 and the competition is to 18 year olds so I have 4 more potential years of youth competition fly fishing!! Thanks a million Jeremy, even with all the use I put to the flies not one fly unraveled!!!!!!Thanks a lot and if you wanna do some fly fishing for some downtown lunkers I'll take you to my honey hole!! PS Went there today...saw tonnes of nice bass but couldn't get them to bite...and the only one i got to bite a 4-5lb largemouth, I lost thanks a lot to everyone

Hey YFF, Whether it's a tournament, competition or just a day out on the water as long as you learn something from that day (s) and you apply that to the next time that you are out it makes the particular experience worth while. You go to these things wanting to win however, what you learned from this event will make you a better angler now and for years to come. Besides, like you said you are only 14 and you still have 4 more years to kick some butt Good work and we'll see you around. Pete
