Well, it's official. Winter has arrived. I know that it's +12 degrees Celsius today and the water is still open but to me winter is here. The boat is winterized and wrapped up and tucked into bed. I think I need a minute alone with her. Planning is well underway for next season......is it spring yet?? Pete

Hi Pete, The boys and I are thinking about going out on the river to find some walleye and crappies. Think they might be in there wintering spots now. My boat will go to bed when all the water is frozen ;D By the way about 10 yrs ago I used to make a trip down to Picton and launched the boat off the beach. Can anybody tell me what the date was when I used to go? Jeremy

Thanks YFF, I have never gone steelhead fishing but for me there is nothing like wrestling a hawg to the boat. 4 pounder with 10 pounds of weeds I'm sure that you will get that 4 + pounder next season. Perhaps we can get together some time next season and target some of those bad boys. Pete

Hey Pete, It was January 15, 1995 and we had an awsome time caught 10 browns and about a dozen steelhead. The warm water discharges down that way keep the water open all winter. Water temperature runs about54degreesF all winter. Lots of fun the fish were all in 5 feet of water or less our biggest problem was keeping the ice out of our rod tips. Have a special rod for this type of fishing with an enlarged rod tip and coat it in silicone evertime I go. like to take the fly rod too. I remember one time when we went down there, some guy was out there in a float tube. Now is that nuts or what I had fun though, only caught three fish that day all on a fly rod. Don't do this anymore to much responsability on the old shoulders can't let my boys down. Wife just hopes none of them do some of the crazy stunts I've done ;D Like fly fishing in the Ausable River for the honeymoon wife wanted to see High falls Gorge, ask her if it was ok if I went flyfishing she say yes. She tells me she went and sees this guy standing in the river right above the High Falls Gorge and this couple says the guys fishing, she takes the binoculars off the couple and she starts laughing and tells them its her husband as she runs off the bridge and promtly comes to tell me its over 100ft drop 20 feet the other side of me. My response being Ya Ya caught some of my biggest browns in the Ausable here. Also showed her where we used to rock climb right by White Face Mountain. This is why I say if you want to fish there is always open water somewhere just got to get there ;D Fishn is fishn just got to be there ;D God Bless, Jeremy

LOL Jeremy I went to the ausable 2 times this summer.....saw high falls gorge...lol if you were standing where i think you were you're crazy Don't get me started about the ausable:p. Had an awesome time both times...was there at a very difficult time unfourtunately..caught 1 fish..a 20 inch brown 8). My bro caught a 15 incher and some small stockers. We tried all of Fran Betters flies and conventional flies for the river but nothing was working. Secret fly-size 8 rusty orange turks tarantula. That was during the hottest part of mid august. Went in october all day and I got 1 bite in the same pool as I caught my biggun and where my my bro caught the 15 incher. Guess what fly..turks tarantuala. The pool is on the left side of the road at flume. Right down from the parking lot. mike

Hey you Guys, Sounds like you both have a lot in common with regards to fly fishing. That is pretty interesting stuff to read.about. YFF, as far as Jeremy being crazy, I can vouch for that.. Crazy but a real nice guy....just don't tell him that I told you that. Jeremy, fishing on your honeymoon. Kim and I went mackerl fishing on our honeymoon. We went to PEI and spent a few days in Cavendish. We had a great time fishing. That says lots about our wives. I mean this is a good way. Pete

YFF The flume don't know many that don't try this spot, did you try after dark? If you do try using a small mouse or a big Wulff Pattern. Caught a lot of fish on it over the years, in the dreaded low water period. Fish it backwards go to middle and cast to shore. If you have not taken the time talk to Fran, he and his father before him have made this water what it is today. I took fly lessons off him years ago and have all his books. he is the Grampa of the Ausable in my mind. I felt really good when he told me he had never seen his Ausable Wulff tied so close to his, I found the key to this pattern is start the wing forward then pull it back, it balances the fly perfectly. Next time you are down there in the fall if you like to fish slack water try a #22 or 24 mahogany dun or a blue winged olive spinner and a size 7X tippit (1lb) or cheat and use the invisible sewing thread ( same size as a 7X tippit with the strength of 3lb test) I know somebody that uses this Hey Pete, crazy and loving it ;D I think both of us are blessed to have wifes like we do God Bless, Jeremy
