;D...As a flyfisherman I get hit really hard by cabin fever . I learned just awhile ago that there is fishing opportunities availible....And after a few questions to the steelhead fishing guru on fish-hawk i'm set . Went to the flyshop to get some materials and got to the tying becnh right away. Have a nice selection of nymphs, white wooly buggers, roe and zonker type patterns. He advised that I put blue, pink and white into the flies. Gonna be hitting coburg whenever my dad caves in....i'll keep you posted on how I do!! Not expecting too much though.. Has anybody tried winter steelheading here?? Sounds like a blast!! pete, I know this is a bass fishing board, and this is totally unrealated....but I hope you don't mind.. mike

Hey YFF, Anyway to break cabin fever is a good way. I'm glad that you started this thread. For the past 10+ years now I have gotten away from shore fishing and fishing little streams that I forgot how much fun I use to have. I'm glad that you are doing this. I hope that you do well and that you share with us your experience. I personally have never fished for steelhead but I know of 1 angler on here that has. Jeremy. I'm sure he has some stories that he can share with us on this subject. No worries Mike post away. Pete

Hi YFF,
Steelhead fishing done this for a few years? When I started ,was in the days of the spring runs of fish were 15,000 and 20,000 in Port Hope. In fact when I first started fishing Port Hope there was not the wood walk ways that you all walk on now? It was natural bank?
The white flies you are talking about do work great, but do not overlook big flies? I sometimes will use 4 inch wooly buggars black. Other colours I also like are Purple and also add flash to these same wooly buggars. Don't overlook the dark patterns they have there place in the winter fishing? Another colour you do not mention is the unlimited colours of greens that are out there. These also have there place in winter fishing. Huge stone flies 4in have there place also and don't hesitate to tie these in Bright colours? Little hint try minnow patterns? Got my largest steelhead on a floating Minnow pattern called a foam fry from a pattern that Bob Church was instrumental in developing? This fish weighed 18lbs.
In my mind there is No reason for a flyfisherman to get Cabin fever? We have so many opportunities to fish all winter. Pulaski and the endless list of rivers in Ontario?
When fly fishing in the winter there are two things to remember. Play safe is number one in my mind this water is so cold it will kill you quickly. If you are wade fishing don't take chances this time of year is very unforgiving. Number 2 is if your not loosing flies your not fishing close enough to the bottom.
YFF I have about 20+ years of time fishing Steelhead if I can help you in anyway do not hesitate to contact me?
Good fishing, Jeremy

YFF Here's one I forgot, I was looking through my steelhead box. Go to your closest dollar store and buy one of those mixed bags of plastic beads all different sizes. Take an egg hook and heat it over a candle when it gets real hot just touch it to bead and presto instant single egg fly. The colours you can make are endless bound only by your imagination. Mine is quite vivid, Just ask Pete Try blues you will get a surprise ;D All the best, Jeremy
