Hi All,
Was out over the July 1st weekend on White Lake and Mississippi Lake and the bass were on!
I decided that this year I am going to get much more proficient with a jig so I decided that's all I was going to fish with this weekend...when I was targeting bass. Well, it didn't disappoint.
My primary weapon was a homemade 1/2 ounce jig with a green pumpkin/brown/light blue skirt, with a green pumpkin and blue speck Paca Craw trailer on it. I fished it on a 6.5 foot medium-heavy jig rod with 17lb mono.
On White Lake I found most of the bass were on man-made structure. I was nailing them on docks and other shoreline objects that were placed there by people. Strangely enough, I didn't catch a lot on natural shoreline structure such as stumps, rocks, etc.
On Mississippi Lake, the largemouth were in weed flats. I was catching plenty of hefty bass on the weed line edges in 7-8 feet of water. Any shallower than that and the bite tapered off. One of the keys to catching them in the weed beds was not to pitch the bait out too far. I found I had to keep it within 10-15 feet of the boat and pitch to visible pockets in the weeds.
I also went after some smallmouth on Mississippi and they took to the jig as well. Main lake shoals in 4-6 feet of water was where I got most of them. It was strange to me, but that's how shallow they were. Big ones too. Plenty of 3+ pounders. This was on Monday the 4th so maybe the calm after a long weekend of heavy traffic on the lake enticed them to get active feeding.
Fished for pike a bit on both lakes as well. On White Lake they were on deeper weed lines in 10-12 feet of water. On Mississippi they were right in the weed beds with the bass. If you go out to Mississippi to fish jigs, bring many, the pike were hammering them too and I lost a handful of them to esox lucius.
Cheers!
