Hey Folks,
The second stop of the season for Bass Anglers Association was on my home lake of Big Rideau. Having fished many tournaments on this body of water and never having a win. Highest finish was second. Won lots of big fish prizes but never a tournament.
Pre fishing was fairly decent, found some new spots and eliminated a lot more. Weather during pre fish was hot, sunny and humid. Tournament day the weather was sunny, hot, humid and windy.
First couple of spots produced a limit (4 for BAA events) of small fish. 7:45 AM and have about 7 lbs in the box. Made some adjustments in location and got out of the wind. 9:15 land my first decent fish 3.2 lbs. Fished this particular area to land another decent fish 2.8 lbs. Made another move around 10:30 to look for some larger smallmouth but the winds had picked up on Big Rideau that made it difficult to stay on the locations to fish them properly, so made another move.
A quiet back bay. Caught my best fish of the day 4.8 lbs largemouth on a Vertical Lure jig X 3/4 oz black blue flipping jig. All I had to do now was to upgrade the last 1.2 lbs fish I had left in the box for another decent fish and I had a chance at a pay cheque. Finally at 1:30 I caught my last decent fish of the day 2.8 lbs. giving me about 14 lbs. I figured I was good for a cheque. I thought 15 lbs was needed to win.
Left the Portland area to head back to the launch site in Rideau Ferry. A normal boat ride of about 5-6 minutes took the better part of 15 minutes. 3 foot rollers on the big lake made for high speed travel impossible. However, trimmed down the big black Mercury Optimax and the Nitro Z-9 plowed its way through the waves to make back to the weigh in with some 5 minutes to spare.
Weighed in the fish for a total of 14.22 lbs with the big fish of 4.8 lbs. Good enough for a win and big fish of the tournament honours. Finally a WIN on my home lake. Caping off a perfect day on the water.
Next event July 31st on Mississippi Lake. Let's hope for another good finish and a constent move up the Team of the year standings.
Congratulations also go out to the other top finishers, Greg and Claude, Roberto and Roberto Sr. and in 4th Rick.
