Was out on Muskrat and Constance Lakes yesterday and the bite, in my opinion, is still a bit slow.
Got onto Muskrat Lake around 10:20AM and fished it for about three hours. I could see the beginnings of some weed growth, but it is definitely behind for this time of year. I caught 6 or 7 decent pike on a white spinnerbait. The pike seem to be on the main lake weed flats and not at the mouths of tributaries like they normally are. Most years at this time you could go to the north end of the lake at the mouth of the Muskrat River and nail good sized pike. Not much to be had there so far this year. So for the time being, if you're fishing Muskrat for pike, stay out on the main lake flats about half way up the lake (from the Cobden launch) closer to the west shore. The pike seem to be sitting in anywhere from 4-7 feet of water predominately.
In the afternoon, I hit Constance Lake just for kicks and giggles. I've never fished this lake, save for one drunken ice fishing expedition many moons ago in my youth, and folks tell me it's loaded with pike and bass. Well, I certainly caught a fair number of pike. Probably a dozen or so in the hour I was there. But, the biggest one was MAYBE 14-15 inches. They were all hammer handles. I lost one nice bass who threw my spinnerbait as she went airborne, and caught a few bluegill and one small crappie. Admittedly, I was simply conducting a quick exploratory of Constance Lake, so I just chucked a few different style spinnerbaits mostly whitish in colour. Pretty much anywhere I went on the lake was weedy and I caught fish all over the place. The biggest concentration was on a shoal marked with an orange buoy, on the left hand side just a bit...northwest I guess it would be...of Constance Lake Lodge.
Oh and hey...how 'bout that wind? Was anybody else out in that? Glad I wasn't on Champlain or Erie.
I'll be heading out tomorrow, not sure where though. I'm considering White Lake, or perhaps Lake St. Francis. I'll post the results.
