Hi Folks, Well, back in Ottawa...actually working here this week, which is rare, and I just finished a Stren tournament on the Potomac River. Got my a** kicked! I performed horribly. I've been thinking about it and still don't know what I did wrong, but I just didn't execute and caught very few fish. However, my day two strategy kind of worked out...in a backasswards way. I caught very little on day one and decided to go hunting hawgs on day two as I needed about 17lbs to make a cheque. Well, I didn't get the big sack on day two, but because I was hunting monsters, I did manage to bring in big fish of the day at 5.06lbs for a nice cheque. Very disappointing tournament, but at least a little consolation. Anyhow, I just wanted to say hi to everybody since I haven't been around much. Hope everyone's tournament aspirations are going as well as they'd hoped. I'm off to 1000 Islands this Saturday for a BFL event. Won't have any practice time and don't know the river very well...guess I'll have to rely on ol' Fishing Hotspots. Cheers! Gary

Hey Gary, The Potomac can be a very mean body of water. Especially if it's your first time as a boater. The tides and water clarity is totally different than what we (Canadians) are accustom to. Where on the Potomac did you fish, Mattawomen, Aquoa, Good luck on the St. Lawrence. Pete

Pete, I fished mostly in Mattawoman and Aquia. I got the big bass on the left side marina before the railroad bridge as you go into Aquia. Got her on a black and blue Sweet Beaver under a dock. Yeah, the Potomac can be a puzzle to figure out. I was on fish during practice, somewhat, but just couldn't get them to bite during the tournament. In fact, my day one co-angler limited out, and my day two co-angler caught 4. The day one guy, Richard Pace, even got a cheque. Maybe I should be a guide, as opposed to a tournament angler. At least I got the big bass cheque which paid for all expenses and then some. I'm nervous about the St. Lawrence. I have absolutely no idea where to go around the 1000 Islands. I'm going to have to wing it completely, find stuff that looks good on the map and check it out. Next year I'm going to make it a point to have practice time for ALL tournaments, including one-day events. Speaking of next year, I saw the post congratulating the BAA team of the year - it's depressing that it's that time of the year again. The season is almost over. Gary

Did you make your way up to the spoils at all, even during pre fish? AS for the St. Lawrence, you can make the run to BOQ or stay on the humps on Lake Ontario for smallies. If you stay on the river you can go around Gananoque area Treasure Island Marina. There's also another bay east of Wellsley Island that I have caught some nice fish on during pre fish. The only thing to remember on the that river is if you make a long run make sure you leave a lot earlier to return because that river gets rough and in a hurry to. Pete

Pete,
Thanks for the tips. As I've mentioned, I'm not getting any practice time due to work and have never fished that area other than as a co-angler so I appreciate the help.
I think I'm going to stick with the basics and go for largemouth.
What's BOQ? Is that bay east of Wellesly the one entering Lake of the Isles, or the one just north of it on the other side of that point?

BOQ is the Bay of Quinte. Lake of the Isles is another good spot however, it usually gets pounded on a regular bases. Good luck this weekend. Let us know what happens. Pete
